Warfare
There have been many disputes involving the Taliban and Afghanistan, and many more surrounding countries, but ever since 9/11, and even before, the U.S. has had a bit of involvement in stopping the Taliban. Much of the fighting is in Afghanistan because the largest group of Taliban members are based there, but they migrate in order to stay hidden. Osama bin Laden, specifically, was in hiding for years since the 9/11 attacks, and the U.S., and many other governments, including Afghanistan, sent out troops to fight for either side (the U.S. strongly opposed the Taliban, of course). The Afghan people didn't like the Taliban, but the government wasn't able to exploit the Taliban, so the U.S. felt that in order to exploit the Taliban completely, the Afghan people needed help. The Taliban has also spread to other countries, so Afghan isn't necessarily the epicenter of the chaos, but a great deal of the Taliban are in Afghanistan, and many more are still in hiding.
Since the 9/11 attacks on the U.S., bin Laden has been wanted, and the fact that just a few planes killed nearly 3,000 people angered the U.S. even more, and made Bush and Obama all the more lenient to send troops to Afghanistan and Iraq to kill and exploit this violent group of unreasonable Muslim extremists.
